"As the CMO of Riveredge Hospital for the last several years, I have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Leeds and his team very closely. It's great and always in the interests of good patient care when Psychiatry and Pharmacy work as a team. We appreciate what our Pharmacy partners do at Riveredge. This is just one example: We had a patient who was out of control. In fact, he was on what we call a "2 to 1" which means that it took 2 staff members with him at all times to control his behaviors. The unit staff called me and I asked Norm to take a look at his drug therapy. Norm called me back right away, and said that he felt that this patient was exhibiting signs of anticholinergic toxicity which resulted in delirium. He recommended that we discontinue 3 medications that were highly anticholinergic, and restrict the use of prn meds to haloperidol instead of Thorazine and Benadryl-both of which are highly anticholinergic. The patient improved dramatically, to the point where he was able to return to the milieu. Their expedient and professional response steeped in pharmaceutical excellence is the hallmark of CPS and is an essential part of quality care. The leadership and support of our P&T Committee continues to greatly impact clinical excellence, fiscal responsibilitiy and most importantly patient care improvement. I would be pleased to share further information if I can be of assistance."
